Synchronous Online eLearning

Synchronous Online classes have the benefit of a live, scheduled class without the travel time and costs. The instructors and students can be anywhere in the world with a computer and Internet connection but still have the communication advantages of live presentations with lectures and demonstrations. Instructors and students communicate in real-time. Labs and class activities involving servers, routers, and switches are completed by remote access technologies. No simulators! This eLearning solution uses a Virtual Classroom model.

The Virtual Classroom

A virtual classroom is defined here as a computer accessible, on-line learning environment intended to fulfill many of the learning facilitation roles of a physical classroom. It replicates the discourse and discussion of a typical classroom with a complete set of features for highly interactive, effective group learning– bringing together voice, video, data and graphics in a structured online learning environment.

Adobe Acrobat Connect Professional

Remove technology barriers from traditional virtual classrooms, and you get Adobe Acrobat Connect Professional—a cutting edge communication and collaboration solution with no software downloads for participants. All that's required is the Adobe Flash Player, already installed on 97% of browsers worldwide. Instant availability and highly-customizable presentation tools provide real-world functionality that anyone can use—wherever they are. View the overview and demonstration to learn more about Acrobat Connect.

Does my computer support Acrobat Connect?

Perform the Meeting Connection Diagnostic. This diagnostic test will ensure your computer and network connections are properly configured to provide you with the best possible Acrobat Connect experience. The diagnostic test checks for the following:

  1. Supported version of Flash Player
  2. Clear connection to Adobe Connect
  3. Bandwidth availability
  4. Latest Acrobat Connect Add-in (Windows and MACs only; no connect add-in for Linux)

If all tests pass successfully, you are ready to log in to your virtual classroom as a participant.

To test your system and connect to a live demo site, visit here. The username is "test@nothing.com" and the password is "password".

How do I setup and tune my audio devices for use with Acrobat Connect?

For most, the best audio experience will be with a closed-ear stereo headset with attached noise canceling, boom design microphone. The Altec Lansing AHS515 Headset is an example of a good headset at a reasonable price. Make sure to shop around because the prices listed at manufacturer web sites are typically higher than prices at reseller sites such as Amazon. The AHS515 has a sound card connector type but headsets with USB connectors are also widely available.

Another option is to use your computer speakers and buy a good microphone. An example of a good computer microphone is the Altec Lansing ABM200 Mountable Microphone. The quality of your speakers/headset and microphone will directly impact the quality of your sound and voice in the virtual classroom.

Make sure your microphone is not muted and is set at an adequate volume level. Use the Audio Setup Wizard under the Meeting menu, located on the upper-left corner of the Acrobat Connect interface. To avoid distraction, those speaking will not be able to hear themselves speaking in a meeting.

When I run the Audio Setup Wizard I receive an error.

This sometimes happens when the Acrobat Connect add-in is installed and being used for the classroom site but isn't working with your system. The Acrobat Connect add-in is not required to use VoIP through the Voice and Video pod or to use the Audio Setup Wizard. The add-in is required for presenters to share their desktops and content and for enhanced VoIP.

To launch the particular classroom site in your browser only (no Connect add-in) you can enter the class URL with an additional entry. For example, if the classroom name is "demo" the browser only URL for that site would be "http://edisonohio.acrobat.com/demo?launcher=false".

The error you receive may look something like the following...
